In December 2017, the New York Times revealed that U.S. Navy fighter pilots had encountered and recorded unidentified aerial phenomena using advanced onboard targeting systems. These encounters occurred during training exercises off the U.S. East Coast and involved objects displaying unusual flight characteristics. Navy pilots reported objects with no visible wings, no exhaust plume, and the ability to accelerate, hover, and change direction rapidly. These objects were tracked using AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR targeting pods installed on F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft.
The Pentagon later officially released several videos and confirmed the objects remain unidentified. In 2020, the U.S. Department of Defense formally acknowledged the footage as authentic UAP recordings. One widely referenced still image from these encounters shows a spherical object captured through Navy targeting systems during flight operations. These encounters are considered among the most credible UAP cases due to multiple sensor confirmations, trained military observers, and official government acknowledgment.
